KYUSS, who were still riding high with the success of “Welcome to Sky Valley”, did a special performance at Videomusic One Inch Man.
Kyuss were forced to change their name to Kyuss Lives! There was really no question if the recent legal hassles had slowed the band. Their new album, Peace , harks back to the stoner roots of Kyuss, while their Metro Theatre show was a surging minute set of raw power from one of the most influential bands in rock history. For most, their no-nonsense brand of good-time rock and roll served more as an entree for the main course.
Extra kudos must be awarded to the guys, all of whom were sporting impressive beards which gave their performance the air of a wild and drunk hillbilly hard rock act. Hitting the stage, there was no fucking around. Vista Chino played it hard and tight, without any silliness or self-indulgence. The band served up plenty of new tracks, opening with the swirling beauty of Adara. The new songs stood tall amongst the classics, further evidence that the band has not diminished over the years.

Power Trip issued the following statement :. It is with the greatest of sadness we must announce that our lead singer and brother Riley Gale passed away last night. Riley was a friend, a brother, a son. Riley was both a larger than life rock star and a humble and giving friend. He touched so many lives through his lyrics and through his huge heart. He treated everyone he met as a friend and he always took care of his friends.

Stoner rock, desert rock, acid rock; doesn’t matter what you call it, there’s no mistaking the sound of Kyuss when they hit the Hunter Lounge in Wellington, Sunday Night. The Hunter Lounge is a venue I’m not familiar with, located within Victoria University grounds, it boasts its own cafe and bar; a pretty classy place during the day, come nightfall and it transforms into the perfect venue for gigs, comedy nights and other events.
After waiting eight long years to see Kyuss live, waiting a further ten minutes while the promoters located my press pass was well worth the wait. Unfortunately it added to me missing all bar one song of epic support- Beastwars, who were a raging stoner metal mass with powerful vocals. A fifteen minute set up time meant prime position for me and my camera to get up front and stay put as the ass kicking ‘Hurricane’ started, a sea of hundreds all in unison lurched forward it was time to rock out- Kyuss had arrived.
John Garcia may be older, wiser and a little bigger round the middle these days, but it made no difference to the power of sound that emerged from within. His gravely tone sounding twice its power and depth live as on CD. Few words were spoken, because the songs did all the talking as everyone around me swayed and bellowed to the likes of Gardenia, Gloria and One Inch Man just to name a few.
Nick Oliveri kept his presence known with his unmistakable pulsing bass jutting haphazardly to my far left; a big shit-eating grin permanently transfixed on his face throughout the night along with an inside joke or three, and a smouldering joint shared onstage from Garcia. Newcomer, Bruno Fevery, taking the place of Josh Homme, did a stellar job containing the Kyuss essence and standing right in front, I got a first hand look at his great guitar licks.
Brant Bjork matched the pace with equal ferocity, with a mass of frizzy hair and sweat, stealing the limelight almost reminiscent of a late John Bonham. I’m sure Kyuss walked away on Sunday, not quite able to believe how hard Kiwis can rock out we welcome them back anytime. Hunter Lounge, Wellington – Sunday May 15 Kyuss Lives!
BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE STILL STEEPED IN PUNK; LUNA IN A NEW REALM
It would be recorded in March and then released on 11 July the same year, mere months before the band would break up. The album features a tighter and more straightforward sound, both in songwriting and production, than the band’s preceding efforts. And The Circus Leaves Town would be released on 11 July with the album’s only single being “One Inch Man”, featuring three b-sides and later attaining a music video. Along with a CD release the album saw a vinyl and cassette edition that notably omits the bonus tracks hidden on the CD.
However the album did not fare well commercially or critically as well as previous efforts, one of the factors in Kyuss’ break-up that October. In an article on the album’s 20th anniversary Garcia would cite Circus as “a horrible fucking record to make” and that “Josh and I were clashing all the time and had creative differences.
1. One Inch Man, 2. Flip The Phase, 3. Mudfly, 4. A Day Early And A Dollar Cover Demon Cleaner (International Single Disc One) | Kyuss.
A couple of initial thoughts come to mind when looking back at Kyuss’ swansong, And The Circus Leaves Town. The first being whether the fact that the Californian four-piece split three months following the date of its release coloured opinions of the actual value of the music. Certainly the lack of promotion could easily have been a deciding factor in how the final Kyuss album ended up being less critically and commercially successful when compared to their two albums which helped birth the stoner rock movement — ‘s Blues For The Red Sun and ‘s Welcome To Sky Valley.
But another argument could be that And The Circus Leaves Town wasn’t actually good enough in the first place, due to each member pulling in different directions, both personally and creatively.

A video was made for “One Inch Man”, the album’s only official single. The album was not as successful commercially as Sky Valley, receiving many lukewarm.

Over the next five years the band released four full-length albums, and one last split EP in as Kyuss and the newly formed Queens of the Stone Age. This nicely tied up the loose ends of Kyuss and introduced the new band Queens of the Stone Age, which was at one time composed entirely of ex-Kyuss members. Nick Oliveri was fired from the band in and replaced by Scott Reeder just prior to the release of Blues for the Red Sun.
John Garcia and Josh Homme would be the band’s only continuous members throughout the band’s lifetime. In November , three former members of the band minus Homme, who declined to participate reunited under the adapted moniker “Kyuss Lives! A federal lawsuit subsequently filed by Homme resulted in Oliveri leaving the band in March , and five months later, Judge S. As a result, they changed their name to Vista Chino. History edit: As Katzenjammer and Sons of Kyuss edit: The band formed in jamming under the name Katzenjammer German slangword for “Hangover” archaic before eventually deciding upon Sons of Kyuss.
In the band recorded their eponymous debut EP, Sons of Kyuss, which was their only release to feature Chris Cockrell on bass. After self-releasing the EP in , the band recruited Nick Oliveri – who had previously played second guitar in Katzenjammer – to replace Cockrell on bass, and shortened their name to Kyuss. The band gradually built a local following in Palm Desert, California and frequently performed at parties in and around the isolated towns of Southern California’s desert areas.
These impromptu and predominantly outdoor shows, referred to locally as “generator parties”, consisted of small crowds of people, beer drinking, and the use of gasoline-powered generators to provide electricity for the equipment.
